3 health benefits of Camomile
Camomile is a flowering plant in the Asteraceae plant family, that produces small, daisy-like flowers. The flowers are then dried and steeped in water to make an infusion. Camomile infusion has been used as a traditional medicine for thousands of years to calm anxiety and settle stomachs, and appears to go back as far as ancient Egypt used then to treat fever.
There are different types of chamomile, but only those from the Roman, German or Egyptian varieties are used to make an infusion. Today, Camomile is one of the most popular herbal teas around, and for good reasons! Many people enjoy camomile infusions as a caffeine-free drink in the evening, for its earthy, floral taste and its smooth finish.
1. Improves sleep quality
Enjoying a cup of chamomile tea before bed is nothing new for most people, and this is one of the most well-known benefits of Camomile: its sleeping aid property. Camomile flowers contain a high level of apigenin, a type of antioxidant, that links certain receptors in your brain and help initiate sleep. Plus, the aroma itself creates an unwinding effect that’s perfect for troubled sleep.
2. Promotes digestive health
Because everyone experiences mild digestive discomfort from time to time, a cup of Camomile infusion can help. Camomile contains anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and carminative properties, which help in soothing the stomach line. Drinking a cup of camomile infusion may relieve an upset stomach, menstrual cramps, indigestion, and abdominal gas. And because of its calming effect on the body, chamomile can be particularly useful for stress-related digestive issues.
3. Reduces stress & anxiety
One of the most common uses for chamomile is relaxation. And as a relaxant, Camomile depresses the central nervous system, reducing anxiety while not disrupting normal performance or function.
How to make the perfect infusion:
Add 1 teaspoon of dried Camomile flowers, or approximately 1.5 g of dried, and steep them in the freshly boiled water for 3-5 minutes. Choose an infuser large enough so the flowers can fully infuse once in contact with the water.
If possible, use filtered water as it makes the infusion taste better than tap water. Don't let the water boil for too long: as soon as you see some bubbles forming, remove the water from the heat source.
Enjoy the infusion on its own in the evening, after a meal or 30 minutes before going to bed, or you can also add some lemon and honey.
